When Is It Time to Replace My Old AC Unit?

When Is It Time to Replace My Old AC Unit?

Has your home air conditioning system put to the test this summer? Will it make it through another summer? Don't risk your air conditioning system letting you down just when you need it the most. Feel confident your AC won't fail you by knowing when it is the right time to replace it.

Three Ways You Know Your AC System is Past its Prime

Many factors including age, operational cost, and the frequency you run your system can determine if it is time to replace your AC unit. These are three of the most common indicators that you may need to go AC shopping pretty soon:

Is the cost of cooling your home much higher this summer than last? As air conditioning units age, they become less efficient at their job. That means that in order for an aging AC to cool the same amount of space, the system may need to run more often.

  • The 5000 Dollar Rule. All air conditioning units need repairs from time to time to keep them working, but would your money better spent by not paying for an expensive repair and just replacing the AC unit instead? Many cooling experts suggest to homeowners that they use the 5000 Dollar Rule before opting to fix their AC. The 5000 Dollar Rule states that if you multiply the age of your system times the cost of the repair, and the result is 5000 dollars or more, forget repairing the system because it makes a lot more financial sense to replace it.
  • Is the cost of cooling your home much higher this summer than last? As air conditioning units age, they become less efficient at their job. That means that in order for an aging AC to cool the same amount of space, the system may need to run more often. Of course, that results in higher monthly energy bills. While buying and installing a new air conditioner can be costly, today's super energy-efficient models are typically able to save you close to 20 percent off your cooling bill each month. If you plan on staying in the home for a long time, a new air conditioner can eventually pay for itself in cooling costs.
  • Is your air conditioning unit older than your teenager? Most AC systems last between 12 and 15 years. So, even if you haven't had any significant problems with your current air conditioner, it may not be worthwhile to pay for even smaller repairs once your AC's age hits the double digits. Not only won't you have any guarantees the repairs will last, but you will continue to pay the higher cooling costs associated with an older system.
